The macroscopic world of stars and galaxies is big, while the microscopic world of molecules, atoms and elementary particles is small.
Although the number of stars and galaxies are in the billions and trillions, the number of atoms in a standard volume of 22.4 liters contains Avogadro's number of approximately [math]6 \times 10^{23} [/math] particles.
Ilya Prigogine's work indicated that these are the two kinds of structures ruling the universe, to which we human beings stand in between observing and analyzing as well as theorizing about one or the other world. See Prigogine's Nobel lecture at http://nobelprize.org/chemistry/laur...ne-lecture.pdf
The total world population stands approximately at 8 billions and counting, yet the fates of many lie in the hands of the few.
