I think I finally found a missing link that I've been looking for ... and it's right in the middle of DNA (I'd assumed it was but couldn't figure out why there were spirals, much less two and it seemed one should be a virtual/exterior mirroring of the other where information flows between surfaces).
Imagine for a second that there exists some system of potentially infinite complexity, yet entirely connected together - a single life form.
Now how could it be seen as a single entity? Not all components are the entirety of it.
In order that it can be perceived as a single structure, a manner to address and view the state of all components is required, but this cannot be a simultaineous thing throughout the entire system, otherwise all positions would appear identical and it would "collapse" into a singularity.
Information loss is irreversible in information theory. When information content is removed, it can't be reacquired, though we can split information into pieces over time and transmit an entire picture in that manner, but not simultaneously.
Now imagine trying to use a colored light to communicate with someone in another universe - let's assume all they can detect is a red, green or blue state.
Well if you try to send something like 5 seconds of green, 12 seconds of blue and 3 seconds of red, on the receiving side this simply appears as green, blue, red and the time component is removed because they can't see your time (time is physics is observer dependent).
Now similarly, if we tried to send 1 second of green and then 1 second the light was off and then sent another 1 second of green, this "off" state is not detected either and effectively you sent 2 seconds of green, which is once again, simply green.
If we look at what information is transmittable with these 3 states, we find it's fundamentally just binary information. From any of these 3 colors, there are 2 possible alternatives.
Now this applies to any number of states in a system. If there are n states being observed, then only n-1 possible transitions in time are detected. Notice also that the dimensionality or qualities of the transmission are no longer the same either - green, red or blue are not, in themselves views but instead the 6 possible transitions of "green->red", "green-blue", "red->green", "red-blue", "blue->green" and "blue->red".
So the "observer" in this case detects 1 of 6 possible states, that fundamentally communicate binary information and each of those 6 states has 2 possible divergent pathways of experience.
If we look at the volume of possible spaces that can be observed in this manner by communication, the size grows factorially 1*2*3*... or 1,2,6,24,120,720,...
If we have a system of 120 components, then synchronization in time is possible using 7 (120=1*2*3*4*5*6) "symbols" or unique qualities of perceptions.
Each of the 6 state rotations can communicate in 1 of 6 possible direction, up to 1 of 5 possible transitions (it is in 1 of 6 states, but transitions in time to one of 5 other states each moment) to a "5 dimensional space", which in turn can transmit 1 of 4 transitions to a "4 dimensional" space etc.
We can then "leap frog" information back up to higher levels by observing multiple states in lower dimensions - for example, observing 2 binary states simultaineously gives 1 of 4 possible combinations (00,01,10,11) and so binary information can be paired together into a 4 dimensional representation.
I've commented a lot on how logic appears to operate over time and fundamentally everything can be broken down to a single, lowest fundamental unit of time. Though recognize that "time" is relative and passes at different rates in different dimensions of representation - more complexity and higher rates of information and "denser" rates of time are possible in higher dimensional forms.
The properties of this fundamentally lowest level of information are much like DNA and I've used that analogy often, with the higher dimensional features similar to correlations across the strand that can act like chemical binding forces and cause DNA to fold. (This is the link I've been trying to find with matter - atoms should be defined by their positions relative to this "DNA" - it's not DNA in a physical sense, except at lower dimensional representations, a large "atom" in this structure could be similar to the entire universe (though it wouldn't be an atom we'd find on a periodic table!... at least not yet)
But it was difficult to figure out how information is communicated across these dimensions in a physical form - it's sitting in the middle of DNA (at least the final leaves of the "tree").
Assume for a second we have an object in 1 of 5 possible states and it's transmitting information over time as 1 of 4 possible transitions.
If this object can be in any one of those 5 states at any time, then on average 1/5th of its states are seen as identical in the "4 dimensional" representation and hence there's a 5:4 ratio in the equivalent rates of time that are passing.
If we want to keep these synchronized in time in a single space, we need to compensate for this ratio, which means we need to compress 5 elements in time for one into 4 elements in time for the other.
If we lay them next to each other, they curl in one direction, though if we want to "straighten" this out, we can instead wrap one around the other! The 5 dimensional "strand" can be twisted into a pentagonal form around the other (and we have ratios of phi or the golden mean and the fibonacci series etc. arise)
There is a 5 way symmetry near the center of a strand of DNA (though it appears as 10 way symmetry, but considering that in lower dimensional representations, the asymmetry of a higher dimensional structure isn't visible, then the two strands appear to be interwoven as a double helix!
Notice also the manner in which the very interior of DNA is constructed by weak hydrogen bonds - in a sense, this is a virtual mirror image of the "edge" of "reality"/objective space/coherent information, though it can appear to possess inverse/complimetary properties inherited by observation of the return path.
And similar to how we can pair up binary elements into a representation with 4 distinct states, there are similarly 4 types of base pairs (in reality there should be a transformation that shows this as binary elements with a virtual partner). So this can provide the mechanism moving from 5 dimensional space (consider that the senses are generally of 5 "orthogonal" forms - sight, touch, taste, smell, feel ... I don't know if that's the correct correlation, but it appears close - notice that science can't "see" conscious qualities because these can vary between people, and similarly physics doesn't have good models past 4 dimensions yet).
Anyway, there are many more correlations and if it may not be a Theory of Everything, it looks to at least be a decent Theory of Consciousness, Life and Computation.
There's still more outside this picture that we can't physical prove and we can look in a more horizontal direction as well as attempt to extrapolate what properties lie further "up" as well. (Again, information only flows one way in a sense, though if the model appears to be true, we can extrapolate upon what physical properties might exist in higher dimensions.
I think subatomic particles may be virtual mirrors of this process and it could be that we need go no lower than individual protons.
I believe these are some of the macroscopic properties observed at higher levels of complexity along this thread http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TK3BGOaQu2k
(again, I don't find it surprising at all that they used the "thin thread model")
Well, that's the latest piece that seemed to fall into place ... (I'm almost embarrassed to mention some of the correlations with reproduction, but it appears to be there also and there's definitely a Yin-Yang version of it)
As a side comment - this structure does not appear to explain the qualities of conscious perceptions though it can show manners in which they should naturally be grouped or related to each other in a specific context of space.
