    what really is general relativity?

It is all about the constant rotation of the time axis. Since everything in the universe has a unique time axis and these are not all align with the universal axis, the best these axes can do is to rotate around the universal axis tilted at a given angle.

Einstein's last days were spent in solitary aspiration of unifying the electromagnetic field and his version of gravitational field from his general theory of relativity. He failed. He almost accepted Kaluza's fifth dimensional theory.

I believed he really accepted it. What makes you say "almost"?

He did not help Kaluza publish the 'paper' and moreover Einstein more than likely did not communicate with Kaluza again.

First, he rejected the whole idea that Kaluza presented. Then, after stron considerations, he replyed again and said that he may have some parts of truth, and invited him to publish the paper. Maybe he didn't help Kaluza publisht he paper for one fo these to reasons:
    1. Althoug his brain had realised the idea, maybe his mind didn't want to accept it, because it fought againsts his principle thoughts.
    2. He thought that Kaluza had enough ability as to manage to publish it himself.

If the first point is the correc one, and I think it is, then he didn't communicate with kaluza again because he disliked him for "Kiking him where it most hurts" (in spanish it's tipicall to use this expresion). But didn't Einstein deserve this kick? He kicked hundreds of thousands of physicists and even normal people in 1905 when he showed time to be a dimension, and not a human creation. But I don't know, I'm not a moral judger for anyone.

I am re-reading part of Abraham Pais' book 'Subtle is the Lord: The Science and the Life of Albert Einstein', Chapter 26. This chapter is a description of Einstein's view and precognition of unification such as general relativity and quantum mechanics.

I have read chapter 6 of Pais' book. However, I find it interesting to note that on page 453 of this book, Pais mentioned that during Einstein rise to fame in the 1930s, he had agreed to write a letter for a time capsule to be placed at the site of the New York World's Fair to be opened in the year 6369. I wondered about the content of this letter? But I guess, I will never know.

Back to chapter 26, here Pais described that although Einstein dislike quantum mechanics for its incompleteness, through the end of his life, he was trying very hard to unify both quantum mechanics and general relativity.
